History of Search Engines

Google, Yahoo, and Bing the three mostly used search engines in recent days. But do you know which one is the first search engine in the world? “Archie” the first search engine produced in World Wide Wave. It was the first tool to be used on the internet at 1990 developed by Alan Emtage from McGill University.

But “Archie” had one disadvantage that time which was it searched for only titles not the contents. The problem was overcome by a developer named Mark McCahill known as “Gopher”. Gopher was able to index all the text files for quick and easy searching. After that it was “Wandex” was developed that let the users to search the web pages using keywords. That was possible as a result of the crawler program that indexed the title in the web pages. These search engines formed the base for today’s search engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing which follow the footsteps of Archie, Gopher and Wandex.
